Tips for Studying the Bible – 1 by Jeremy P. Thompson
When studying the Bible, it is often beneficial to get an overview of an entire book before delving into smaller sections. In teaching/learning research, this is referred to as moving from general to specific. For instance, if you want to study the story of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38, it is helpful to have an overview of the whole Book of Genesis beforehand. If one only starts with this particular passage, the complexities of Judah’s character would be missed entirely. In Genesis 38, he is presented in a negative light, but he appears to change throughout the story of Joseph as a whole. When instructing lay people or ministers in how to do Bible Study, I normally recommend two ways of getting a general overview of the books. If possible I would suggest doing both, not just one or the other.
I would first suggest reading or listening to an entire book from which you would like to study at one time. Now, this may seem an insurmountable task for some books of the Bible like Isaiah; however, in my own studies I have found it very helpful. It is one thing to read about the summary statements in the New Testament Book of Acts and quite another to read the entire book at once noticing the summary statements at work.
Second, I would suggest reading an introduction to the book in a good Study Bible. This will be more time effective if you are preparing lessons, sermons or even simply doing devotions on particular passages and do not have time to read through an entire book. Generally, a good study Bible will give you an introduction and an outline that can provide you with a helpful overview of what is going on in a book as a whole.
